CONCORD, N.C. – The WKA Board of Trustees met February 7-8 in Indianapolis and one of the items on the meeting’s agenda was the rear tire rule for Junior Sportsman classes in the RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Gold Cup Series.

The board voted to allow Sportsman competitors to run Bridgestone YLC 4.50 front and 4.50 rear OR 4.50 front and 6.00 rear in the three Sportsman Gold Cup divisions – Sportsman Pro Gas Lite, Pro Gas Heavy and Methanol. This means in effect at Jacksonville, Sportsman teams have the option to run 4.50 or 6.00 rear tires.

The board also discussed and voted on the number of sets of tires Junior Sportsman teams can declare during a Gold Cup weekend.

If a competitor is competing in two or three of the Sportsman classes each day, the team has the option of how many sets of tires they want declare for the weekend.

To help explain the options, read the following scenarios.

   A)  Competitor A is racing all three Sportsman classes each day. He may declare three sets for the weekend – one set for Sportsman Pro Gas Lite 1 and 2; one set for Sportsman Pro Gas Heavy 1 and 2; and one set for Sportsman Methanol 1 and 2. This will force Competitor A to change sets of tires multiple times throughout each race day.

   B)  Competitor B is racing all three Sportsman classes each day. She may declare two sets for the weekend – one set for all three Saturday classes, and one set for all three Sunday classes. This allows Competitor B to run the same set of tires all day Saturday and all day Sunday, thus not having to change tires numerous times each day.

   C)  Competitor C is racing all three Sportsman classes each day. He may declare three sets for the weekend – one set for both Saturday’s Sportsman Pro Gas Lite and Heavy classes and a second set for both Sunday’s Pro Gas Lite and Heavy classes, and one set for Saturday and Sunday’s Sportsman Methanol classes, totaling three sets. This would be advised for teams that have separate Pro Gas and Methanol karts.

   D)  Competitor D is racing only two of the three Sportsman classes each day. She may declare two sets for the weekend – one set for all day Saturday and one set for all day Sunday, thus avoiding having to change tires multiple times each day.

   E)  Competitor E is racing only two of the three Sportsman classes each day. He may declare two sets for the weekend – one set for Sportsman Pro Gas Lite 1 and 2, and one set for Sportsman Pro Gas Heavy 1 and 2, thus forcing the team to change tires multiple times each day.

Many teams have expressed concerns about needing to change sets of tires multiple times each day, along with making weight and gearing adjustments and any other maintenance between races. These options give teams the choice to run the same set of tires throughout each day’s programs and not change tires numerous times in a day (see Competitor B, C and D examples).
