CONCORD, N.C. – WKA officials are pleased to announce the 2014 RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Gold Cup Series schedule, which returns to a four-race platform next year after a couple seasons of hosting five national events.
The Gold Cup Series will open at its traditional venue, the 103rd Street Sports Complex in Jacksonville, Florida. The season kickoff will take place March 7-9, and the 2013 Gold Cup year-end awards ceremony will be held in conjunction with the event.
The Gold Cup will have some time off between rounds one and two. The second event of the 2014 season will run July 11-13 at G&J Kartway in Camden, Ohio. WKA officials have opted to move the Camden event to the weekend after Fourth of July in an effort to give racing families and officials the holiday weekend to spend away from the racetrack before embarking on southwest Ohio for a full weekend of racing after the holiday.
Following the Camden national, round three will approach fast with an August 15-17 date at Pittsburgh International Race Complex in Wampum, Pa. The 2014 version of the Pittsburgh Gold Cup show will mark the sixth consecutive year the series has visiting western Pennsylvania.
The season closer will come with a TBA October weekend at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, S.C.
The Kershaw event not only will close the 2014 Gold Cup tour, but it will serve as the series’ Grand National. WKA and CMP officials are still determining the October weekend for the Gold Cup and WKA will announce the official date as soon as it becomes available.
Series officials are optimistic the Gold Cup Series will continue the growth it enjoyed through the latter part of this past season.
The final rounds of 2013 – Pittsburgh and Kershaw – saw a spike in entries from rounds two and three with a high point focused around strong competition and entries in the new Sportsman Pro Gas Animal and Senior Pro Gas Animal classes.
At the Kershaw season closer in early October, over $3,500 in purses were awarded to senior racers between Senior Pro Gas, Animal Medium and Friday’ Senior Animal Money Race, while a number junior and senior racers left the track with new sets of Bridgestone tires, Van-K Wheels certificates, gallons of Thor Oil and R2C Performance air filters.
In 2014 an updated class structure will cut down the number of divisions running each day as the series moves to a Briggs Animal-only series, along with a new Senior LO206 class. Each age category will have Pro Gas and traditional methanol Animal classes.
