Johnny Jacumin has passed away (updated)
06.18.2010 WKA would like to send its thoughts and prayers to the family of karting ambassador Johnny Jacumin, who passed away Thursday morning at the age of 71.
Jacumins contributions to the sport of karting are staggering. A North Carolina native, Jacumin was involved in karting for several decades. His Karolina Karters group promoted several WKA Road Racing Series events over the years, in the past at Rockingham (N.C.) Speedway and more recently at the Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, S.C.
Jacumin and the Karolina Karters promoted the annual March Road Racing national at Kershaw through 2009. Jacumin stepped aside prior to the most recent Kershaw national due to health issues.
A 1988 inductee to the WKA Hall of Fame and former member of the WKA Board of Trustees, Jacumin was well-respected and revered throughout the karting community, and particularly in Road Racing.
Jacumin had several interests outside of karting. He served five terms as a Wingate, N.C., Commissioner. He made his living as a public school teacher and was an accomplished head coach of Wingate Universitys successful Lady Bulldogs basketball team.
Jacumin is survived by his wife, Cookie, and children Scott and Ginger.
The entire karting community will greatly miss Jacumin and forever appreciate his contributions to the sport.
The family will have visitation at Gordon's Funeral Home in Monroe (1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, N.C. 28112) on Sunday, June 20th from 6-8 pm. They will then celebrate his life in a service at Wingate Baptist Church (109 East Elm Street, Wingate, N.C. 28174) on Monday, June 21st at 11 am.
